How To Make A Time Stamp

As you go deeper into producing original tracks, you'll find that you need to interact with other producers and get opinions on your progress.

This means, of course, that you'll be giving them feedback on their work too.

But how do you do that if you're a total beginner and you don't know what to say?

Here's a neat trick that will let you leave really useful comments on other people's tracks, without worrying that you'll sound like a troll -- or a total noob.

HOW TO LEAVE THE PERFECT COMMENT

  1. Play a track you want to give feedback on
  2. Listen for something you notice — a sound you like, or a moment that's epic, or a spot where the mix needs to change a little.
  3. Mark the time in the song where it happens, in minutes & seconds.
  4. Start a comment about it. Write the time stamp first and tell the person what you noticed.
  5. THEN ASK A QUESTION ABOUT WHAT THEY DID AT THAT MOMENT

The point is to start a conversation where they share a production tip with you, you share some feedback with them, and the whole group benefits from seeing it.

Here are a few examples.

USE THE TIMESTAMP RECIPE

Let's review what to do.

  1. Listen for a detail in the track
  2. Look at the exact time it happens
  3. Write a comment using the minutes:seconds of what you heard
  4. Ask a question about the sound, or make a suggestion
  5. Continue the conversation when the other person replies.

Remember, the best way to make progress is share your tracks and ask for feedback from other producers who are more experienced.
